What do you call it when someone talks about themselves while asking for advice but says something like...?

'; I have this friend.. and she/he has this problem '; or '; My friend asked me if you could give her/him some advice... '; Thanks! What do you call it when someone talks about themselves while asking for advice but says something like...?
It is false projection. Or lying. What do you call it when someone talks about themselves while asking for advice but says something like...?
obvioulsy they want you to give them advice for themselves and the friend is just a myth but for some reason they feel more at ease mentioning a problem to you if they believe you buy their story that they are talking about a friend and not themselves. and of course you are smart and you know they '' the friend'' and they want the advice.. but in this case I would prentend I believe in the imaginary friend and if I could help woud say .. '' If I was in your friends situation I guess i would do ....xxxxx''' instead of blowing their cover and saying '' I know you are the one who really wants advice so why don't you ask straingt out.. I believe it's more tactful to let them believe we are too dumb to look through that story about '' the friend.. we all know in 99 % of all cases it's advice for the person who asks and not for the friend....but would prentend I believe it.... it does no harm..xx
They are nervous about admitting that they are really talking about themselves and don't realize how obvious they are being by saying it that way. Some people just have a hard time opening up more than others, thats all.Just go with it and give them the advice :)
They don't want to come right out and say ';I have this problem.'; They are embarrassed and don't want to be judged and they want a sense of anonymousy (sp?).
THERE EMBARASSED TO ASK FOR THEMSELVES WHICH IS REALLY WIERD BECAUSE YOU MOST LIKELY MEET ANYONE WHO ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION.

BUT ITS A WAY OF PROTECTING THEMSELVES OR A HYPOTHETICAL QUESTION.
It's asking a hypothetical question

MAYBE THE PROBLEM IS SOMETHING THAT EMBARASSES THEM.
it sounds like they are asking advice for themselves but are embarrassed..
people who are embarrassed by themselves
I don't know but I have a friend that would like to know the answer to this.
she is probaly worried that you will judge her so try to say something like, oh yeah i was min the same situation before
They are trying to be discreet.
Protection for him/her
